The Statue of the Dying Achilles
The palace's most iconic piece. The oversized bronze commands the lower terrace and sets the tone for the entire visit. Allow time to walk the full garden circuit.

Perched on a hillside above the village of Gastouri, roughly 10 kilometres south of Corfu Town, the Achilleion Palace is the most celebrated cultural landmark on the island. Built in the 1890s for Empress Elisabeth of Austria - better known as Sisi - and later used as a retreat by Kaiser Wilhelm II, the palace blends neoclassical grandeur with Homeric mythology in a setting that looks straight out of a dream.
The terraced gardens overflow with statues of Achilles, Apollo, and the nine Muses. The grand staircase opens to panoramic views over the Ionian Sea, the Albanian coast, and the rolling olive groves of central Corfu. Few places on the island reward slow, unhurried exploration quite as generously.
The best way to get here is by car. The palace sits on a hillside road that buses service only sporadically, and taxi fares for a round trip with waiting time add up quickly. A Corfu car hire puts you in complete control - arrive when the light is softest, linger as long as you like, and continue south toward Benitses or swing back through the village of Sinarades on the return.
Leave the airport and follow signs south toward Kanoni and Perama. Continue on the coastal road past the Halikiopoulou lagoon, then turn inland at Perama following signs for Gastouri. The road climbs gently through olive groves before depositing you at the palace car park. The whole drive is an easy 12-14 kilometres with virtually no complex junctions.
Head south from Corfu Town on the main artery toward Benitses (take Leoforos Alexandras out of the Old Town area). Just past the village of Kinopiastes you will see signs for Gastouri on your right. Follow these uphill for a couple of kilometres. The palace sits above the village with clear parking.
The palace's most iconic piece. The oversized bronze commands the lower terrace and sets the tone for the entire visit. Allow time to walk the full garden circuit.
From the upper terrace you can see Corfu Town, the Albanian mountains, and the bay of Benitses all at once. Photographers should arrive before 11am for the best light.
Neoclassical statuary lines the terraced gardens. The upper pergola walkway offers shade and a sequence of framed sea views that feel almost theatrical.
Drop down to the coast for lunch at one of the waterfront tavernas in Benitses. A classic Corfiot fishing village with some of the freshest seafood on the island.
The small village that wraps around the palace hill is worth a slow stroll. Traditional kafeneions, a lovely Byzantine church, and a pace of life entirely different from the resort coast.
On your return via the coastal road, stop at Kanoni for the celebrated view of Mouse Island and the tiny white chapel of Vlacherna - one of the most photographed scenes in Greece.
The palace opens from around 8am. Arriving at opening time gives you the gardens largely to yourself before the tour buses roll in around 10am. A compact automatic or economy car parks easily in the limited spaces near the entrance during early hours.
The road to Gastouri is well-maintained but has a few steep hairpins. An automatic car rental in Corfu makes the climb noticeably easier, especially in summer heat. Economy and compact categories are perfectly capable; a larger SUV gives extra comfort on the rural return roads.
The Achilleion is genuinely child-friendly - the garden statues fascinate younger visitors. If you add a child seat to your booking, you can do the full loop from airport to palace to beach in one relaxed day. All child seat categories are available to add at checkout.
Our rent car Corfu no deposit policy means no large security hold freezes your account during the trip. You pay only your agreed rental rate, with a debit card accepted at pickup. Free cancellation applies if your plans change before the day.

Local tip: After the palace, take the inland road through Sinarades and Agios Mattheos on your way back north. The views over the Ionian Sea from that ridge are quieter and arguably more striking than the famous Kanoni panorama.
